Apple unveiled its much rumored Siri based speaker (The Homepod), at the 2017 Worldwide Developers Conference in June. At first it was due on December 2017 but now apple has delayed the release until 2018. Apple’s statement to the verge says “We can’t wait for people to experience HomePod, Apple’s breakthrough wireless speaker for the home, but we need a little more time before it’s ready for our customers,” in another statement “We’ll start shipping in the US, UK and Australia in early 2018.”
The Homepod is a cylindrical unit, it is seven inches tall it contains 1GB ram, It features a 7 tweeter speaker array and an Apple designed 4-inch upward facing woofer, and six microphones so that it can be verbally activated using a voice command “hey Siri”. The Homepod will be available in two colors (White and Space Gray). The Homepod will cost $349. Homepod can surely be called ‘smart’ speaker because it comes with the same A8 Fusion chip that powers the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. HomePod is equipped with spatial awareness, allowing it to intelligently analyze a room and adjust accordingly for the best possible sound. It Includes a touch surface on its top to allow controls for simple navigation.
The Homepod is equipped with an array of 6 microphones which it will use to listen for voice commands. You will be able to give it commands to control the music as well as you can also ask questions to it about the song that is currently playing, like the name of the song, the singer’s name etc.By using A8 chip which Apple claims is the most powerful processor to ever be found in a speaker, Apple describes that the microphone array used in the homepod is intelligent enough to cancel out background noise so that the speaker can hear your voice over the sound of its own music.Apple has confirmed that the new speaker will be spatially aware, so it will know how to optimize its sound to suit your home. It will detect the space that it’s in, directing channels as appropriate depending on its location.
HomePod integrates with Apple Music, Apple’s streaming music service. It will connect directly to Apple Music in the Cloud over WiFi, so it will be able to access a user’s music library, complete with playlists, customized music mixes, and preferences.
A Homepod user will need an iPhone 5s or later running iOS 11 to be compatible with the speakers.
Hopefully the Homepod will be as good as expected.
